Extension Television!

It’s true what they say: the camera DOES add 10 pounds!  At least that’s what I’m telling myself, and my friends in the broadcast industry corroborate the notion so I’ll go with it.  And my southern West Virginia accent, which I affectionately call my Appalachian Twang, is audible after all.  I guess five years in Charleston hasn’t been enough to totally reverse it, huh?  Not that I’m complaining.  Apparently it’s also true what else they say: we are our own worst critic!

I am referring, of course, to the action of watching myself on television, which I’ve been doing every month since August, when Extension Matters premiered on Charleston’s Library Television Network.  The first show featured an overview of WVSU Extension.  Other topics have included a look at our after school program; an “Extension in the Kitchen” healthy cooking demonstration; a profile of the West Side Main Street program; an “Extension in the Garden” wreath-making segment; and some fitness tips for staying trim throughout the holidays.

This show has been quite a learning process for all of us here at WVSU Extension.  We’re attempting to create a show that highlights the great work Extension is doing while also offering viewers some useful information they can incorporate into their own lives.  Personally, I think we continue to get better with each episode, or at least more comfortable in front of a camera.  I know I do anyway!  We’re always open to topic suggestions and new ideas, so if you’ve got any, don’t hesitate to drop me a line at brownima@wvstateu.edu.

Visit the Media Gallery section of the site to view past episodes of Extension Matters or catch it every week on the Library Television Network (channel 17 for Suddenlink subscribers) at these times:

Wednesdays @ 11:30 a.m., 5:30 p.m., 11:30 p.m.

Thursdays @ 5:30 a.m.

Saturdays @ 5:30 p.m.

And also check out Extension Matters podcasts and Extension Matters Magazine right here on our Web site!

EM TV Show

I agree, the experience of being on the show was unbelievable. I'm not too anxious to watch it if the camera adds 10 pounds though. I did want to add that parents should use their resources to come up with ways to keep their kids reading this summer. Use the internet for sites such as pbskids.org to find fun and creative ways to keep your young children interested in reading. And utilize your local library. It's there for a reason. My son is two years old and he loves any book that makes noise. But most of all, he loves it when I read with him. He'd rather read than watch television!

Each month, the television show keeps getting better and better. The content remains fresh and timely, while giving an overview of programs that WV State U Extension offers.

I think it could go primetime very soon...............
