West Virginia Made kicks off with tradeshow in Morgantown

    The first annual WV Made tradeshow will be held at the Lakeview Resort in Morgantown, WV, September 10–11. The trade show will bring together West Virginia artisans and gourmet food producers with retailers and wholesalers from around the state. Approximately 50 vendors will be in attendance to display and sell their West Virginia made products.

WVSU Extension Service searching for blackberry producers

    West Virginia State University Extension Service has received funding to begin a demonstration and research project that will trial blackberry varieties in West Virginia. Potential growers will be selected through an application process that ends September 15.
    
    “The purpose of this project is to determine the most viable blackberry varieties for our region,” says Scott Byars, Program Leader for Agriculture & Natural Resources.

West Side Main Street continues to improve with beautification project

     Continuing with the Economic Stimulus grant for improving the streetscape along Charleston’s west side, the West Side Main Street (WSMS) program has been awarded $13,500 to continue improving the area between Beatrice Street and Hunt Avenue. WSMS will use the money to “clean up” the area and purchase trash receptacles along with street furniture and benches along this section of the Washington Street corridor.

West Virginia Recipe Challenge at the State Fair! Registration extended and still open!

Potential food entrepreneurs from across the state will converge at the State Fair of West Virginia on Sunday, August 15, for the fifth annual West Virginia Recipe Challenge.  Entrants will compete for over $10,000 in goods and services and a chance to have their product launched in the marketplace. There is a category for existing businesses as well with a prize package valued at over $2000.

Help Kids Choose Healthful Snacks

Kids are out of school for the summer, and you may notice them heading to the refrigerator more often.

However, they might not be making healthful choices. Candy, cookies, chips and cake are among the snacks kids choose most frequently, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture survey. Calories can add up quickly. For example, one can of soda pop has up to 170 calories and no nutrients.

Snack time is the perfect opportunity to include more fruits and vegetables in your kids’ diet.

Day camp to offer agricultural education for youth

     West Virginia State University Extension Service will host a special day camp for area youth at the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church located at 805 Price Street on Charleston’s west side. The JMG Garden Day Camp will take place on August 4th from 9:00-3:00.

Annual 4-H camp promotes music education, features special panel discussion on Hip Hop

     West Virginia State University Extension Service is hosting its annual 4-H Hip Hop Camp, a weeklong overnight camp for youth ages 12 to 18 that focuses on skill mastery in Hip Hop Arts traditions. The camp will take place at Camp Virgil Tate, July 25-29.
    
     The camp incorporates education in the arts with traditional camp activities such as swimming, sports and hiking.
